What am I expected to audition with?
Please prepare a 1 minute monologue and, if auditioning for a musical, a 16 bar (or 1 minute) cut of a song.
What is the timeline for the audition process?
Typically, initial auditions (song and monologue) will occur MTW, dance auditions on Thursday, callbacks on Friday, and cast lists emailed out Saturday.
Are there any restrictions on song/monologue choices?
We just ask that you avoid performing selections from the show you're auditioning for. Song cuts should be limited to 16 bars (or 1 minute) and monologues should be no longer than 1 minute.
What if my song or monologue is longer than 1 minute?
If your song or monologue lasts more than 1 minute, you may be asked to stop by the creative team. This does not mean they did not enjoy your selections, it is simply to keep auditions running on schedule.
What should I bring to my audition?
Make sure you've completed the online audition form. Be sure to fill out the conflicts portion of the audition form to the best of your ability, including any conflicts you expect to have and their specific times. You are welcome to bring some kind of instrumental accompaniment track (please no lead vocals!). You can bring a small speaker or just play from your phone, but you are also welcome to sing a cappella. Other than that just bring yourself!
What can I expect from my audition?
You'll first be greeted by Casting Associates in the hallway outside of the audition room. We will check you in and confirm that you have submitted your audition form with conflicts and past experience. When the audition team is ready, a Casting Associate will bring you into the audition room, you'll be introduced, and you'll perform your monologue and song (you can pick which one you want to do first!). You may be asked by the director to re-do one of your pieces to get a better idea of your range and capabilities, or asked a few questions by the creative team.
I want to be in the show, but only as a certain character. Will I have the chance to indicate this?
Yes. There is an area on your audition sheet where you can indicate any character preferences you might have as well as if you are willing to accept an ensemble part.
Should I dress as the role I'm interested in for auditions?
Don't come in costume, but you can dress in the style of the character. You don't have to dress like anyone at all, just look put together, make sure the clothes are not too constricting, and most importantly, feel confident and comfortable!
What if I have no dance experience?
Just do your best: showcase your ability to portray a character, tell a story, and keep up your energy.
Which productions are cut and which are no-cut?
Everyone that auditions for the winter rep shows will receive a part, whereas the fall musical and spring play have more limited roles.
I didn't get a callback! Does that mean I didn't get cast?
Nope! Historically, HOOLIGANs have definitely been cast in shows they didn't get callbacks for. It's also possible that there are roles the director isn't calling people back for, but will instead cast during the rehearsal process.
When will I know if I got cast?
Everyone will receive an email regardless of whether or not they were cast in the show.
What is "fundraising" and why do I have to do it?
When you are cast in a HOOLIGAN mainstage production, you will be expected to contribute to the show's overall funding through individual fundraising. There are many ways to do this, and these options will be thoroughly explored at the first read through for cast and at the first Blue Sky meeting for crew. Student theatre is very expensive to produce, but it's all made a little easier with your help!
Do you have to be an undergraduate student to audition?
Unfortunately, only UCLA undergraduate students are allowed to participate in HOOLIGAN productions, but we appreciate your interest and hope you come to support our show!
