Sustainability involves weaving together the considerations of environmental well-being, social fairness, and economic prosperity to foster communities that are vibrant, healthy, inclusive, and capable of withstanding challenges for both the present and future generations. It acknowledges the intricate interplay between these facets, understanding that addressing such multifaceted issues demands a holistic systems perspective and a recognition of their complexity. HOOLIGAN Theatre Company will continue to promote sustainability by actively seeking innovative eco-friendly practices, integrating them into all aspects of production, and engaging both the company and audiences in meaningful dialogue about environmental sustainability.

HOOLIGAN's Environmental Statistics
- Average audience members can travel up to 19 kilometers to get to and from a theater venue. This equates to 0.006t CO₂ worth of carbon emissions per audience member per show!
- To offset this, we use theater venues on campus, which are walkable for the UCLA students and faculty that make up the majority of our audiences.
- Since our Winter Rep 2024 venue holds 192 audience members per show, we can save up to 1.152t CO₂ worth of emissions. This is 6.912t CO₂ we save for our 6 Winter Rep shows combined!
- These numbers do not even include the emissions we save by our production members being able to walk to the venue during our tech week rehearsals and all rehearsals throughout the quarter.

Sustainability on Broadway
The Broadway Green Alliance

- BGA promotes eco-friendly practices through education, annual events, and waste diversion drives, significantly reducing e-waste and textile waste.
- The Green Captain program mobilizes theatre professionals to lead sustainability efforts, resulting in significant backstage changes like energy-efficient lighting and the use of rechargeable batteries.
- BGA's initiatives illustrate the practicality of integrating sustainability into Broadway, emphasizing the cultural influence of theatre in promoting environmental awareness and action.
