Little Women follows the March sisters of Concord, Massachusetts from the innocence of childhood to the confusion and heartbreak of early adulthood. Josephine March (“Jo”), a young aspiring author, struggles to understand the romantic aspirations of her sisters, instead dreaming of breaking into the male-dominated publishing industry. But once she tries, the writing doesn’t come easily and the blunt Professor Bhaer motivates Jo to look to her childhood and family for inspiration. The rest of the musical looks back on the young lives of the March sisters, like Beth, a kind and gentle musician, struggles to reconcile poverty and privilege, while also struggling with her health. Or Meg and Amy, who similarly aspire to marry--one, for love, and the other, for wealth and security. All the while, Laurie--the grandson of their wealthy neighbor--challenges the girls to venture beyond their comfort zones and develops a lifelong friendship with the family. As the March sisters mature and answer for themselves the difficult question of independence or companionship, they always return to the support of each other, as well as their mother, Marmie. With a beautiful score, Little Women takes us along with the March sisters on their journeys of personal discovery, reminding us all of the importance of love, friendship, and staying true to oneself.
