Frequently Asked Questions
Do you have to audition to be a part of pit?
The process of joining the pit orchestra will vary for each show depending on the music director. In some cases, you simply sign up. In other cases, you may be asked to audition. We will keep you updated on this page and our social media! For your audition, you may be asked to perform something from the show or a solo piece you prepare on your own. The goal of this is simply to ensure that you will be capable of performing all of the music in the show.
What skill level do you require?
There is not a set “skill level” for pit orchestra, as certain shows have unique requirements. If you are interested in joining a show’s pit orchestra, please reach out to the music director of the show or DM us on Instagram!
How often are rehearsals held? What is the general time commitment?
The time commitment depends heavily on the difficulty level of the music and the music director of the show. For the earlier weeks in the quarter, there may be a smaller time commitment of around a few hours per week in mandatory rehearsals, but members are expected to practice outside of rehearsal as needed. As it gets closer to the show, the time commitment increases as the pit must prepare for the Sitzprobe, which is the first time the pit will play with the cast, and the following tech week and shows, where the pit orchestra will be expected to attend from Wednesday through the show's closing that weekend. Rehearsal dates and times also depend on the music director and the needs of the cast and crew, so reach out to the music director if you have any concerns!
Do you have to be an undergraduate student to participate in pit orchestra?
Unfortunately, HOOLIGAN Theatre Company is limited to undergraduate students at UCLA, but we hope that you come to support our productions!
